I was just thinking about traveling and digital cameras. I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for the best digital cameras for traveling. Things like durability, water resistance, size, and picture quality are all considerations. Right now I use a Fuji FinePix A700. I have no idea how it compares to other digital cameras, it was what the guy in the store recommended. Therefore if anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to hear them! _________________ Mark Amherst

Getting a digital camera is very personal i would say. For me Canon will always be my first choice
But what is wrong with you camera you have now? (why do you want a new one)
I heard good stories about the Pentax camera that is water proof (but didn't try it myself) _________________ GHPtravel,

Hi,Amherst Island
All depends on what type of pictures you are going to take. Most of the top camera makers have good equipment that in the main are reliable and for travel that is one of the things you need , that is unless you are going into tropical hot and damp conditions or on to ice cap's etc when you have to have top class pro gear. Don't get carried away with the "pixel count " as even a 3 mp will give good enlargements up to and above A4 (11x8 inch), in fact if you are touring for some time a smaller pixel size will not fill you cards to fast.
For top quality you cannot beat a SLR and at the moment the price of the lower speck cameras are very good , look out for a kit with one or better still two len's. Down size to a SLR is weight but the image quality makes it worth it. Look out for a Nikon D40 as Nikon are giving a cash back deal.
Some of the compact cameras look good on paper but for certain types of photography they don't work as well i.e. portraits as they have a shutter time lag and in bright sun you cannot see what you are taking.
Have a look at photographic forums on the web to see other peoples ideas.
Happy traveling

If water resistance is very important, take a look at the Olympus cameras that can go 10 feet underwater. But supposedly, image quality and usability suffers a bit.
I've always stuck with the Canon powershots. You can buy a Canon made underwater case for most of them to go snorkeling/diving or for other wet situations. _________________ Paul's Travel Pictures

Hi Paul,
The Canon G9 is a good compact with loads of top features including the Raw file system but a bit over priced.

I enjoyed my Sony digital cam on my trip (the newest touch screen one, not sure what model). It was very long lasting for battery, the memory sticks never ran out and it was virtually indestructable every time I dropped it. The last week of my 4 month trip the lens screwed up and the camera didn't work anymore... The only drawback. It was fixed pretty quick when I got back to canada, just a problem because of dust... I guess that's what happens when you travel! You just gotta learn to deal... _________________ Backpacker Resource

I recommend the Canon G9 without reservations.
The price is right (currently about $460), and it is capable of exceptional macros. With a wide-angle lens, you can shoot all the scenery you want. In addition,
it has a hotshoe for flash if you choose, and shoots in the RAW format, so you can enhance your pictures by computer if you wish. All in all, a solid camera that is small enough for traveling. _________________ signature privileges revoked |

I watched the Gadget Show last night (05/10/2009) and John reviewed three digital cameras for under £100.
There was a winner, but I cant remember which one it was, well worth checking out the episode if you are looking for a good camera on a shoestring!! _________________ Travel Insurance - Insureplc.com |

Hi
I would recommend the canon sd1000 over the canon sd750. It is a little bit more pricey but has an optical viewfinder, unlike the sd750. It also has great image quality, face detection, quick performance, a good feature set, and a compact design ideal for travel. It is fairly easy to use for such an advanced camera. Plus its a canon which is my personal choice as a photographer.
Thanks !!!! |

I just bought a DSLR from B&H, the Pentax K7. I love having a DSLR, but I hate carrying it around. Dont tell anyone, but I actually have been using my Leica point and shoot because it is so small I can carry it in my pocket.
Pentax had a great deal when I bought it, like $100 rebate for the camera kit, plus $100 for each lens you bought. That might be over now, but take a look, there might be some good deals out there.
Someone mentioned pentax having waterproof camera, and I know that the K7 has Weatherprrof seal, but I dont think its water proof.
Good luck. _________________ Travel Droppings: work. Travel. Explore. |

| Canon D10 is a very good waterproof camera. My brother has one and we use it for capturing under water shots. |

My choice is Canon SX10IS. Its a compact SLR like camera with 20x zoom and very affordable for amateur photo enthusiasts. _________________ www.seizpacks.com |
