Villa versus hotel. The pros and cons. (Costa Rica)
Hotel
Pros...lots of amenities, restaurants/bar/nightlife on premise, guests can feel secure with help/concierge on grounds.
Cons....limited privacy, often people tend to stay on premise and never leave to explore the country, can be expensive to eat/drink.
Villa
Pros.....privacy/intimate setting, you can cook for yourself, you have a better chance of getting out and exploring the country you're in, can be economical with a large group.
Cons....too private...some people may want to be around other travelers, have to leave to go out to eat, have to cook for yourself,
There are more to both and there are explanations that can be made to either. Alot of people go to another country and can feel "scared" about getting out and doing things. A hotel they're with other travelers, there's a concierge who can help with activities, etc. Villas are private, you can hire a cook (if not included) or cook for yourself. They have private pools (most), you can play music on the CD player out by the pool, most have a concierge/property manager who help with tours, needs, etc.
I can only comment on Costa Rica as that is my expertise. Other parts of the world may be totally different.
Anyone care to share?

Hi, I agree with everything that you have said and I think that pretty much applies all over the world.
To me the luxury of going in a villa rather than a hotel, is just the amount of space that you get. It is also great for socialising as a large group (out on the terrace around the pool). Also great for putting the kids to bed and knowing that they are safe. How many times do you sit around hotel bars with young toddlers asleep in their pushchairs!! _________________ Holiday Home Rentals direct from the holiday owner from www.ryanairlettings.com

What is this doing in Pros section? Cooking for yourself during a vacation? Ain't that just terrible? I'm cookin' the whole year round and then go on doing the same on holiday? No way!
As this is luxury travel section, I will say that a penthouse in a nice hotel is the best option. Or you can also go for a catering villa (it's when a garcon comes in to cook and clean). _________________ Terracotta Warriors | Tutankhamun Exhibition | Visit Dorset |

| A lot of people like to cook even those who stay in luxury villas. And yes you can rent a villa with full staff and even all-inclusive. I'm not rich. I don't have a staff. When I travel I prefer not to cook (really because I don't know how). I do cater to high end clientele at times and I get those who like want total privacy, don't want a staff and would prefer to cook themselves. |

There is a company based in greece that i think has found the perfect line between villa holidays and hotel holidays. The peligoni club has a variety of different villas, owned mainly by british famillies, and lets them out in the summer. they vary from little studios to large luxury villas.
What makes this company different is "the club" a restaurant, bar, spa, tennis court, and watersports. It functions in much the same way as a hotel, but with more of a house-party feel, you'll have to search google for peligoni as i am not allowed to post a link for some reason!!
anyway i hope this helps |

Since you were talking about having a staff and cooking, I would like to suggest villas in Jamaica. The reason being is because most all the villas in Jamaica come standard with a full staff and it's included in the price of the villa. This is such a great feature. The staff can do the shopping for you, based on a menu/preference you talked about, and they can do all the cooking.
I personally think it's so nice to not have to worry about shopping and cooking while on vacation. I do enough of that at home.
So in Jamaica you get the luxury, and privacy of a villa along with the staff to do the cooking for you. The best of both worlds! _________________ This signature file does not comply with the rules on signature files and has been removed by a moderator

| I think you get more bang for your buck with a villa. Luxury hotels are so expensive. A room/suite/small villa with a plunge pool at most luxuy beach resorts costs $1000 a night. You can get a four bed villa with full size pool for the same price. But then again. you don't get the facilities than a hotel has to offer. |

Luxury Villas definitely give you more for your buck than luxury hotels if you are comparing a room in a hotel to a villa, which, price wise, is more comparable than say if you were getting a suite at a luxury hotel. I think villas are the new way to travel as they offer just as many amenities as hotels, but give you so much more space and privacy, something i often look for while on a luxury vacation. _________________ Oasis Collections - Luxury in South America

Renting a private villa give you
- More space, privacy than hotels
- Luxury villas also offer personal concierge, private chef, chauffeur and other luxury services just as hotels
- Easy for families and large groups to come together
And there is so much offers on the market _________________ Luxury Vacations |

I have never stayed in a villa before, but i would love to stay in one. I don't mind hotels, but sometimes they are just too busy for me. I can imagine that villas are more relaxed and you don't have to run things according to the hotel's time table for example having to eat dinner at a certain time every day. A villa holiday would be great with friends and family..however most villas are usually in the middle of nowhere! I would have to stay in a villa close to a town and the beach _________________ Gran Canaria Holidays

Personally, for me staying on a Villa will be awesome, especially if you're traveling with family or friends. It'll be really cool to stay in the luxury of your own space, i mean like having a privacy and of course, if you're traveling with kids, it'll be so much fun for them to swim in the pool and play around the Villa grounds.
But hey, Hotels are not bad too. When we travel, we often stay in Hotels, so I guess Villa for me will be quite different. _________________ Phuket Hotels

| What if the villa is in essence, a fully catered, state of the art, 5 star service, boutique hotel? Casa Nova in Deer Valley is amazing. |

I have seen many villas and they are actually very good to spend some nice days there. But, hotels are also very good no doubt. But, I personally think that villas are more preferred, if you are on a long holiday with your family so that you can have your own fun.
I have even heard that, villas are affordable to buy at some places. _________________ Hotels in Pacifica |
