OK, I seem to have got the hang of it now, finally! Have been out picking mushrooms again this morning. Found various different varieties:
Theses are called "apagar llums" which roughly translated means "switch off the light". Discard the stems and break the heads into 3 or 4 pieces, coat with egg and flour and fry in olive oil. We had these for lunch today, even the kids liked them! They are 6-8 inches in diameter and do shrink a bit when cooking.
From top left hand corner, clockwise. Fredolics, Escarlots, cama de perdiu, mocosa, rovellons & llengua de Bou
These are llengua de bou, roughly translated means "tounge of ox"
These are rovellons which what we went out to find really but I only came accross 5 of them.
Escarlots "scarlets" and cama de perdiou "leg of partridge"
The rovellons and llengua be bou are especially good to use when making beef stew, which I will be making tomorrow.
There are many different types of mushroom which may resemble the mushrooms I have described here, which may be poisonous. Please take extreme care when collecting mushrooms and if in possible go with an experienced "mushroom picker". _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

Morels are out now. My neighbours who are experienced "mushroomers" showed me their haul yesterday. I havenīt had a proper chance to go out and hunt so far but unless conditions are perfect, they are very hard to find. A lot depends on how much it has rained, if there has been much wind and how much sun. My neighbours had about 30 or so but all very small, maybe 1.5cm on average. _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

I probally found more morels this spring than all the rest I have found in the previous years. I did take some photos and will post them up when I get around to it.
Here in Catalonia it has been raining quite a lot for the past week and I noticed some out of season mushrooms yesterday so I am going up in the mountains to see if I can find any nice ones _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

I'm from Canada and most mushrooms grown in the wild are considered "poisonous," or so we have been told by parents, teachers, and adults all our lives. And we continue to pass this "warning" or "story" on too our children. After reading this thread, it's gotten me to think...are the mushrooms I see in my backyard actually poisonous? Or was it just a myth passed on through the generations just to prevent kids from eating things they find outdoors? How do you tell if a mushroom grown in the wild is edible? _________________ Evaluate It Discount Travel Program

Please donīt experiment! You need to find somebody who can go hunting with you and tell you which ones are good to eat and which ones to avoid.
There are actually very few which can kill you, quite a few that will make you ill and most will not harm you at all but are maybe not so good to eat.
The trick is to find the ones which are tasty to eat!
Last week I went out with a friend who knows a lot about mushrooms. It is very strange to find good mushrooms here in mid July but with all the rain we have been having we found lots of Ceps and something like 20 or so "ous de reig". http://bolets.wikispaces.com/reig?f=print
My frind is an acclomplished "mushroomer" and it was the first time in his life he had found these "ous" or "eggs". First time for me also.
These are considered possibly the tastiest wild mushroom you can find. Not only are they pretty rare, you can never forecast when or where they will grow. You have to catch them at exactly the right moment or they decompose very rapidly. They are delicious by the way _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

Oh wow, an accomplish "mushroomer." I need to find myself one of those kind of friends haha. I love mushrooms too! But yes, don't worry, I won't experiment and eat the mushrooms in my backyard.
Wow, that mushroom is orange. How do you prepare it for eating? _________________ Evaluate It Discount Travel Program

the ous de reig are sliced into about 7-8mm pieces, laid out on a baking tray sprinkled with olive oil and salt and placed in a fairly hot oven for 8-10 minutes - very simple and very delicious
ceps can be also cooked the same way or gently fried in a butter olive oil mixture.
I dried quite a lot of the ceps i found the other week. To dry them, again, slice about 3mm thick, place in the sun for a day or two until dry and then can be stored in an air tight glass container. _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

Now is the best time for mushrooms but I have been away from home for the best part of 4 weeks and unable to go out with my basket, knife, children, dog (in any particular order) and spend some time in the forest looking for mushrooms
Hopefully the weather will still be mild enough next week and there will be 3 or 4 mushrooms left for me............................... _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/

Although it is not really the proper time for mushrooms a little bird has told me that after some heavy rain, some ceps are out in the oak forests on the French border............ _________________ http://www.charmingvillas.net/
