|

Hey all.
I've got me a massive bag of doxycycline for my trip to Africa in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone else has used it? I know it's meant to cause problems with skin sensitivity so I've armed myself with factor 40 sun cream and am hoping that I should be OK. Has anyone had any problems with it?
Thanks

I used it when I went to Tanzania and didn't have any noticeable adverse effects. Of course, it can affect different people in different ways, though, and the side effect you mention is just one of those possible.
From http://www.fda.gov/CDER/drug/infopage/penG_doxy/QA_doxy.htm
| Quote: | What are some possible side effects of doxycycline?
This list is NOT a complete list of side effects reported with doxycycline. Your health care provider can discuss with you a more complete list of side effects.
Some possible uncommon but serious side effects of doxycycline include:
a life-threatening allergic reaction (symptoms are trouble breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; hives)
blood problems (symptoms are unusual bleeding or bruising)
liver damage (symptoms are yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, nausea ,vomiting, loss of appetite, abdominal pain)
irritation of the esophagus
Other more common, but less serious, side effects include:
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
increased sensitivity of the skin to sunlight
vaginal yeast infection |
If you are in any doubts, consult your doctor.

| I used it a few years ago while travelling through Zambia Cat_Tastic and got absolutely scolded, my back peeled for weeks. I would definately be careful of the sun if you take it. |

Hi,
Just back from Kenya, I always use Doxy, its very good, and dirt cheap if you buy it in Kenya or wherever you are going. Mine cost a fraction of what they ask in UK.
Thanks |

Howdy
To update, I used Doxy and now I'm back I've got to take it for like another 3 weeks or something to finish the course but I had no problems at all when out there. I got sunburnt but that's more likely to do with the fact that I'm Scottish and have the palest skin ever seen rather than the doxy. So t'was all good. Thanks for your replies.

Doxycycline is used to treat many different bacterial infections, such as urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, and chlamydia, periodontitis (gum disease), and others. Doxycycline is also used to treat blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea. It will not treat facial redness caused by rosacea. Doxycycline may be used in combination with other medicines to treat certain amoeba infections. _________________ sumvision cyclone |

I've taken it.
It's probably going to clear you up, but your body will build an immunity to the antibiotic and your acne will probably come back... That's how it was with me atleast.
Make sure you protect yourself when you go out into the sun as well. I was outside too long and ended up getting sun poisoning in my hands and they still aren't the same from it... So be careful! _________________ Chandigarh hotels
