I'm planning to take Arabic lessons in Cairo or Alexandria next year. Has anyone attended ILI or the Fajr Center or Qortoba or any other private Arabic language schools? Do you have any positive or negative feedback or advice for me in chosing a school?
Thanks for your help. |

I spent the month of March taking a class in Egyptian colloquial Arabic at ILI. I enjoyed it very much. The teaching was good, the food in the cafeteria was also good, and the cafeteria workers were friendly. I went on a couple of the tours ILI sponsored, which I enjoyed.
That said, there are a few drawbacks. I didn't bring a computer, and not all the computers at ILI could play the CD that came with our textbook. Also, I didn't get much practice in listening, either from the teacher or from the CD. If I were to do it again, I would try to find a private tutor who could drill me on listening. For example, prices in stores tended to be something like 8 1/2, rather than just 8, and I could never understand them. Also, I think that phrases like "I want..." and "I want to go to..." should have been taught to us earlier than they were because they are so useful.
By the way, I was in level 2 rather than level 1, partly because I used PImsleur's Egyptian Arabic CDs to learn a little before I went and partly because I've had some Modern Standard.
You don't say what sort of Arabic you plan to study. If you plan to take Modern Standard, I would recommend also taking some Egyptian colloquial because that is what is used in the street and in the shops. |
