Just looked into it a bit further. If the airline is based in the EU they have to provide you with reasonable accommodation and food. So thats 3 meals a day and a hotel.
If the airline isn't then there's no obligation. _________________ Stansted Airport Parking

Though saying that I once got stuck in Washington for 3 days as I missed my connecting flight, (the first one was delayed after being struck by lightning) and delta airlines gave us a hotel each night and vouchers to get breakfast, lunch and dinner each day. _________________ Stansted Airport Parking

cheers mate. at the moment our flight is good to go.
this whole thing is surely a glimpse of whats to come. planes cant keep flying forever, fuel etc will run out. airships are what we need and longer holidays to allow slower travel.
3 cheers for dan snow and f.t.p. |

It was interesting this morning on the radio when it appeared that the majority of people were on the side of the airlines. Having discussed it in the office, we are of the opinion that it should not be down to the airlines to cover accommodation costs for those stranded abroad - after all that's what insurance is for isn't it. The airlines, through no fault of their own, were grounded and were unable to pick up people.
For flights that could not leave the UK, clients have been given their money back or have been able to book a flight on a future date [or that has been our experience]. Also, hotels abroad have been brilliant. We have had many holidays cancelled and not 1 single hotel has charged us any cancellation fees for arriivals either the same day, or a few days ahead as they were aware of the situation. It is a pity that we did not get the same response from some of the UK hotels where clients were due to stay overnight prior to early morning flights. |

In that case, the flight was canceled because of a mechanical problem with the plane (even if it was lighting that caused it) so the airline was obligated to provide for you. I have been in situations several times over the years where storms have caused cancellations, and got nothing from the airlines. _________________ Lee's Travel Guide
