Invariably when I go on vacation I get the stomach flu. Someone recently mentioned to me that there is a pill you can take a week or so before you go away that can help prevent running into these problems. They said I could get it from the pharmacy but really provided no details on what it was or how it worked. Has anyone heard of this before? does it work?

Thank-you.

it might be just the water - not necessarily the foods.

for the first few days stick to the usual diet before jumping on a local foods - in case of problems Imodium should help and is available all around the world

Imodium is to cure Diarrhea.
For an upset stomach you can take Motilium. It prevents you of getting sick, but doesn't cure stomach pain.

I know what you mean, I take Buscopan - that helps. After a few days I don't need it anymore because than I'm accustomed

I though it was available all over the world - I already bought it in Belgium (where I live), but also in Mexico and Argentina - everytime without subscription Wink
Maybe best check with your local pharmacist.

My doctor commented that while motilium was OK as a 'help you go a while without vomiting' thing, in most cases be believed in a 'better out than in' school of thought - especially if you didn't know why you were being sick.

I'm not a doctor, and I'm not sure if that's the usual advice, but it does make sense to me - if you are vomiting to get rid of something toxic, and you take something to stop you being ill, surely that's just making things worse?

I try to ease in to eating local foods - I don't normally go to places all that exotic, but I try to stick to fairly plain foods, and try one new thing a day. I'm also paranoid about what I drink.

It is usually the water that causes issues, so be vigilant. My tips are to avoid ice cubes unless you know they are from bottled water, most hotels do use bottled water, but always worth checking, especially out the hotel. My other tip is use bottled water to brush your teeth.

Stay safe and happy holidays!!

I find the best thing to do to avoid stomach upsets is too avoid delicacy style foods - ice cream, water from taps and other common sense things like them

I recommend using bottled water and checking food before eating - if having meat, check it is throroughly cooked throughout - alternatively eat in major food chains (i.e. mcdonalds etc) or eat packaged foods only

You cannot 100% avoid stomach upset as its a total change of diet surroundings and climate so your body invariably needs time to adjust, you will most likely just have to tough it out!

The main danger is concealed in water. Use bottled water. Try not to abuse national food. Check your eat.

First, the water in Europe is not a problem. Other places, maybe less so, but I know people use the fountains in Italy to fill their water bottles, for example, with no problem.

Second, I am NOT going to skip having gelato in Italy! Ice cream or gelato is not going to give you stomach problems.
