Best thing to do is to Google for that particular tour operator and see what other people write about them. If you don`t find anything or bad reviews than I`d stay away; if the comments are good you can go further.

Obviously keep in mind that some tour-operators write their own reviews (under another name) but usually they are soooooo positive that it gets suspicous too Wink

On normal circumstances they would ask for a deposit as a way of showing commitment depending on the policy of the company 20-30% would be required then balance paid either before or on arrival. Again this is not starndad and varies from company to company....

I know Tanzania has a reputable organisation for tour operators called TATO (Tanzania Association of Tour Operators). It's not necessarily foolproof but can allay some concerns if an operator is a member.

Maybe there is something similar in Kenya?

It appears there is:

From http://www.katokenya.org

What is KATO?
KATO stands for the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, which is an organisation comprising of the leading and most experienced tour operators in Kenya licensed by the Government of Kenya.

Who are your members?
Our members are Licensed Tour Operators operating in Kenya as well as allied foreign or trade companies whose membership is of benefit to KATO.

Also a quick word of warning. If a tour operator claims to be a member of such an organisation, don't just take their word for it. Check for yourself that it is the case.

Normally, A deposit of a range of up to or about 50% is required for booking and full payment at least 30 days or so before Tour Commencement. Why they are demanding the full payments is still not very clear. My general advice is: if you don't feel comfortable with any of their policy, don't feel pressurized to give in. In addtion, please pay particular attention to the General Terms & Conditions including the Cancellation Policy.

All the best.
