Looking for a vacation destination that will offer my family an enriching experience. We have two children, 11 and 14. Want to stay in the region (Carolinas, Virginia). Considering The Smithsonian (Washington, DC), Colonial Williamsburg, VA, Biltmore Estates (Asheville, NC), Historic Charleston, SC, Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens (New Bern, NC). Any opinion of which way to go?

Surely this group has opinions on the places I mentioned. Washington, DC and The Smithsonian is weeding itself out of the choices because of cost. What about the others? Anybody been to Biltmore Estates, Charleston, SC, Colonial Williamsburg or Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens? Let us know what you thought. Is one a more enriching historical experience than another? Thanks!

Give people a bit of time to respond. There hasn't been 24 hours between your posts. Also, please introduce yourself in the Introductions Forum. You might find people are more willing to help out if you've told them a bit more about yourself. Thanks and good luck... (sorry, I can't actually help with this one!)

Thanks for the comment Paul. Didn't mean to come across as impatient. Thanks to your advice, I just posted an intro. Thanks again.

From your choices, I would suggest the Smithsonian (19 great museums) my preference Air & Space Museum - the Mercury space capsule, the Wright Flyer, etc etc etc. Bonus- you can also do a day trip to colonial Williamsburg. Museums and colonial Willamsburg, now that should be enough history for two kids. Wink

When you look at the cost involved, don't forget that entrance to all of the Smithsonian sites is FREE. I know Washington is a bit more expensive than some of the places you mentioned, but this might make the difference. And if the children haven't been there before, then the experience will be great for them. You can add the Capital Building and other places in DC to the list as well as Mount Vernon which isn't too far away.

One note, the new Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. This is located outside of DC near Dulles Airport. The museum entrance is free, but it costs $12.00 for parking. (At least it did, it may be more now.) However, this is the cost per car, so with four people this is the same as it would be if the entrance fee was $3.00 per person. So it's not as bad as it sounds at first.

Same advice applies to NY City. Stay near a commuter line 30 minutes out and you'll save a ton! A friend from AU did that lat year for NY and spent about $100 a night for lodging verses the $300+ of many in town hotels.

Also if you can, book direct with the hotel you select. All on line travel systems cost either you, the hotel, or both money. Plus accuracy is not all that good with the online systems. Someone pays for all those TV ads that we suffer under.

Enjoy your travels.

Well, I’d like to suggest Colonial Williamsburg, VA which reaches over 301 acres with a numbers of houses, public outbuildings and shops are rebuilt on their original foundations. Although buildings are open for public but some of them are private residences and administrative officers.
You’ll find a plethora of walking tours, trades demonstrations, drum parades, arts performances, fife, political speeches and military exercises and some other activities. Events and activities keep changing on weekly basis so you need to confirm otherwise.

I highly recommend either DC or Williamsburg. DC's not all the expensive if you search for good hotel deals, use the metro to get around, and eat cheap. As a previous poster mentioned, admission to the museums is free. Williamsburg is especially fun for the kids. There is a Bush Gardens park there and lots of kid-friendly historic attractions where they do reinactments.

Since you mentioned about enriching experience and you have two children, so i guess museum will never be a wrong choice. Smithsonian Museum will be a great option for your family.

Here is the link, http://www.si.edu/ for the museum.
