Has anyone bee to some of the lesser known and lesser traveled islands in the caribbean? I love the natural beauty of the region but hate the crowds and commercialism. I don't want to see a Subway or a McDonalds in my tropical paradise if you know what I mean. I have been to Anguilla, and that was as close to perfect isolation as I have ever been. Anywhere else you can think of? _________________ Oooops! My sig doesn't comply with the rules on signature files and has been removed by a moderator

I haven't been, but I have heard good things about Dominica. Less commercial, and lots of good natural places to see.
Of course, Cuba doesn't have too many American companies, though they make up for it with lots of Canadian and European tourists... |

My girlfriend and I are on Margarita Island right now in Venezuela. Seems like more of the European travelers visit here than North Americans.
There are plenty of nearly deserted beaches here with no Subways or McD's except for in the main city, Porlamar. _________________ Paul's Travel Pictures

| I spent a few days on St. Vincent for work last summer. Definitely not an overdeveloped tourist destination there. I did see Pepsi and a KFC there, though. |

My wife and I are trying to keep Roatan quite. We love the little island. It is the largest of the 3 Bay Islands off of Honduras. Many secluded beaches can still be found if you ask some of the locals in the 'West End'.
I have done Roatan, Jamaica, small resort on west side of Nicaragua and am going to San Juan, PR in a couple of months. |

Greneda was wonderful. No port so ships can't dock you arrive by small tenders. I saw no fast food anything it's like you step back in time and just enjoy the island breeze and smell of spices in markets and smell of local cooking. The people come to greet you and share there island by personalized tours of island. _________________ Cheap Hotels – guaranteed low rates on travel

Topic is worth opening back up.
If you really want to get away from it all, try Dominica,(Dom-min-neeka) the island lying between Martinique and Guadeloupe. Roseau the quaint capital may have a sprinkling of the modern world, just a sprinkling, but when you hit the trails outside of Roseau, its marvellous. You have this feeling that you are on a scouting trip for Christopher Columbus. A trip through the Carib Reserve, and you are in a different world. I was born and lived in Barbados for most of my life, but Dominica is my #1 Caribbean Island. _________________ FV432 |

Even though this is an old topic, I'll throw in my contribution!
I did a sailing trip in the Grenadines quite a while back. Visited Grenada, Cariacou, Petit St Vincent and Petit Martinique amoungst others. I'd say the best way to get away from the crowds is to do that, i.e. charter a sailing boat to take you to the less visited islands. _________________ Robert

| Bonaire is great especially for snorkellers and divers. Curacao also good but more developed. |

Well, apparently the Turks and Caicos are pretty isolated, but I think they are very touristy as well. But there are no dense crowds. It attracts mostly luxury travelers, and it's very expensive. If you want to avoid seeing Subways, McDonald's, and other commercial stuff, Cuba is definitely a good spot. There are lots of great beaches there off the beaten track. Varadero is their big resort town. _________________ miami hotel deals |

Cuba is not a crowded place and for sure you will not see any McDonald or such big companies because they cant have business in the island. Its a great place to visit or stay for long periods, specially if you are with kids. Visit it and evaluate it by you own. _________________ http://www.cubacation.net |
