My partner and I are planning our first trip to Mexico and Central America. We are interested in doing the southern loop of Mexico, Guatemala, Cuba and possibly parts of Belize.

We have 3 months and would rather see a bit less and not feel so rushed than be constantly on the move. I'm really interested in seeing some natural landscape, Mayan ruins, having some 'chill out' time, and gettinga feel for the cultures in these countries.

I would love any advice on itineraries (we are thinking a mix of overland travel and internal flights probably) as well as must-see places or places we might skip on our travels, and any suggestions about how to get around (buying a car versus bus travel etc).

Thanks!

You should visit Xcaret Eco Park , Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, they have the best beaches there in the Riviera Maya. You can stay in Play Del Carmen for some nice deals in Hotels though this city is growing to be almost as Big as Cancun. When in Belize be sure to check out Altun Ha, Xunantunich and Ambergris Caye Island and go down south to Placencia.

Bamba Experience is the best resource for adventure travel in Mexico, hostels and for backpacking in Central America, Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica. Make sure to check our site map.

I did the exact same trip in 2006!! Definitely check out Bacalar, a fresh water lake in the Yucatan. It is gorgeous. In Cuba, Trinidad is awesome. We went to Santiago as well but that sucked. I wish we went to Viñales instead. Belize is wonderful. The people are so friendly. Placencia was fun because of the people, but the beach is ugly. If you want to see beautiful Belizean beaches, I think you have to be further up north. In Guatemala, don't moss Semuc Champey. Beautiful for swimming and chilling out. We stayed in a hostel called El Retiro that was really fun. We went tubing there and met a lot of cool travelers. Rio Dulce is also very cool. I'd recommend Lago de Atitlan but they are having some major problems with pollution right now that they need to resolve before more tourists come piling in.

I agree with Kathleen, definately check out Bacalar. Also I would add that you may want to add Belize, only because it otherwise you will have to backtrack over routes you have already seen (assuming you enter Guatemala in Chiapas). Otherwise your trip sounds great. I am jealous.

Bacalar is so gorgeous. If you go please send us some pictures as I have not been there since last year. The lake is known in Spanish as the Lake of 7 Colors. The water is clear and sweet and the bottom is sandy - almost white.

Belize is on the way to Guatemala and the rest of Central America and Ambergris Caye with its Barrier Reef is worth a visit,

I travelled through Mexico 2 months ago on a 6 week trip. Nightlife was big on my agenda everywhere I visited. I would have to say, hands down, The Boulevard Nightclub was the most fun and entertaining. The place itself is fantastic, and whoever did the interior design etc did a remarkable job.

Are you going to buy a car for the three months trip, I can advice you to use any travel agent or some other transportation for three months.
