Hey.
Has anyone been to Hydra? Would you reccommend it? I am going to a wedding in Athens at the end of August and thinking of taking three days after to go to Hydra as its pretty nearby.
Do you know would I need to book accommodation in advance? I've been to quite a few other Greek islands and know its easier to wait to get accommodation when I get there - would it be the same for Hydra? Would there be the usual hoardes of guest house owners looking to give you cheap accommodation, or will its proximity to the mainland mean everything gets boked up in advance. I'd be looking to spend about €40-50 a night on a double room with air-con. Is that reasonable?

Thanks!

Yah I have been to Hydra, defiantly worth a visit. It is a really picaresque place with red-tiled houses and stone-paved narrow alleys every where.

Hydra, due to the proximity to the capital, gets really busy during summer and all years' week end.
The best is to book in advance.

There are still a lot of places in Greece you can visit.

It has a lot of great beaches and the food there are great.

You should try to look into travel guides. Try to look into this site (sunsort.com/guide/spain) Sunsort Travel Guide

I don't think that 3 days are enough for a trip to Crete because it is far away from Athens where the marriage is taking place and the ferry takes 6-8 hours to arrive in Crete. Of course, one could go there by plane (it takes no more than 50 minutes) but it would cost more that the ferry. However, in my opinion you can spend your 3 days in more that one islands near Athens such as Hydra, Poros, Aegina etc. There are boats that pass through all these islands, so it will be easy for you. If you arrive there during summer, it is better to have booked your room in advance because it is usually very crowdy there. Wink

I suggest that you visit the nearby islands of Athens. Summer time there is just great. Quiet and overwhelming!

My wife and I stayed 5 nights in the Aphrodite room at Phaedra Hotel. I was in Hydra for a meeting that was held at the larger Bratsera Hotel. Phaedra is a beautiful small hotel. Very clean and quiet. Breakfast is simple but delightful. Hilda knows at least 5 languages and she provided good guidance regarding restaurants and activities. The room has a kitchenette and the hotel is a short walk from markets. There is no pool. Hydra is a low key and charming destination for relaxating, walking, and enjoying simple Greek taverna food.
