I know Italy gets quite a lot of overseas marriages. If the actual wedding is to be overseas make sure your friend checks out all the regulations conerning making a formal recognised wedding there. There can be quite a few hoops to jump through depending on the country.

Greece is a beautiful place to get married - imagine sands like Jason's golden fleece, houses as white as the bride's dress, and seas as turquoise as her ring - actually, I have a great photograph of my friend's hand that makes this one more than a metaphor. The Greeks are a wonderfully hospitable people, and there are a huge variety of places you can choose from.

If your friend does decide that Greece is the place for a wedding, Islands of Greece offer a great variety of honeymoon suites and private villas throughout the Greek islands (follow the signature link).

If not, you could go for something more unusual. Going to Champagne in France would be a great excuse to sample some of the local drinks, something not especially recommended in Greece unless you have a very high alcohol tolerance, or you could get married in an ice church in Sweden, and stay at the Ice Hotel

I think Italy would be a beautiful place to get married and also to have the honeymoon. There are so many places to choose from, Venice, Tuscany, Florence and Rome are all very lovely and romantic. How long does she want to be away for? She could have an extended honeymoon travelling around Italy and also other European destinations.

@Clair,

Have you ever been to Florence? I'm intrigued - some people say it's lovely, but others say it's a bit forbidding. A friend of mine who's sung there a few times says that apart from the Domo and Medici palaces, there isn't actually much that's nice. I've been thinking of going to Italy myself recently, if not back to Greece, and Florence is somewhere that keeps popping into conversations.

A good idea for the extended honeymoon, though. If she's not from Europe that would give her time to discover all sorts of places - and as the most expensive part of the holiday will probably be the flights over here, she could make the most of them. Flights and ferries between European countries aren't usually that expensive.

@Emily
What time of year is she graduating? And does she like the heat, or cold? Culture or nightlife? The more we know, the more we can help. Looks like you've landed yourself a few European travel experts here, so I'm sure we can suggest something useful between us!

Hi islandsofgreece, I've not had the chance to go to Florence myself but I've heard good things about it from others. The food is excellent and there's meant to be some amazing galleries and beautiful little villages around Florence to visit too. I suppose it depends on what you like doing. Why didn't your friend like it?

I was tempted to post a long reply to islandsofgreece about Florence, but I won't hijack this thread for that, except to say that I never found Florence forbidding.

As for a place for a wedding, Florence might be good, but a better place, in my opinion, would be a smaller Italian hill town such as Montalcino
That link has information about getting married in Montalcino, but there are lots of other options also. You can click on the Home Page link for other options in Tuscany, including Florence.

Forget the rest Emily! I have the perfect place and you will not be disappointed i assure you.

Lake Bled is almost paradise on earth and many couples get married here every year.
Google Lake Bled in Slovenia and see why!!!

Couples get married in the castle above the lake with unbelievable views of the Alps and then they visit the church on the island where the groom has to carry the bride up 99 steps to the top and ring the bell.

There are also horse carriage rides and the whole wedding package!!!
Of course, there are many things to do for the guests as well. It is a holiday wonderland!

Send us a message for more details!

I agree on that - I am a huge fan of Italian food and wine, especially Chiantis, so I would love to visit the vineyards around there. I think my friend went away from the main areas into the smaller streets looking for the best restaurants, and although found the food amazing, didn't like the architecture so much.

I've never been to Slovenia, but lake Bled looks fantastic! I probably shouldn't be saying that as my boss would prefer me to direct you toward somewhere in Greece, but it is beautiful. I think a wedding there could rival one in Santorini

Hi islandsofgreece, I would also love to go to the vineyards, that would be amazing. Maybe Venice might suit your friend better in terms of architecture as there's some beautiful buildings there. Where are you planning on going on holiday this year (apart from Greece!) ?

The most popular are
Paris in France
Venice/ Rome/ Florence in Italy
Santorini/ Mykonos/ Rhodes/ Corfu/ Milos in Greece
Madrid/ Palma di Majorca/ Barcelona in Spain
Prague in Chech Republic
Montenegro (amazing) in Serbia

It depends on what kind of travel you prefer and what your budget is.

Apart from these romantic destinations I’d also like to recommend visiting Italy in Venice for wedding/honeymoons. The place is unlike any other on the planet because most of the city has streets filled with water, giving a romantic ambiance to it.
The top places to visit are Piazza San Marco, St. Mark's Basilica, Doge’s Palace, Museo Correr, Grand Canal /Canalazzo, Island Excursions, Guggenheim Museum and The Teatro La Fenice.

Europe has many beautiful countries and places worth visiting, but you relay have to know what you want from your trip especially for a wedding. Do they like crowded places? mountain resorts or sunny beaches ?
