Although I can't help you with specific details on purchasing a car or insurance, i did meet a Danish couple who were doing that same thing and had bought a Land Rover in Brazil and were covering the entire continent. After four months of travel they hadn't had any problems, but did run into a couple doing a similar thing that had been robbed four times. The only real difference between the two was that the couple that got robbed was keeping their car clean and had collected bumper stickers from all over the continent. The Danish couple never washed the outside of their car and kept low profile by keeping the car bumper-sticker free. They didn't speak much spanish and were blond, so go figure! _________________ check out L!VE Travel Guides - www.livetravelguides.com - its a great resource for planning a trip to South America. Hi there,
Has anyone driven this route or any where near it? Can I re-register my car to hopefully avoid harassment for USA plates?
Thanks,
Renee |

well it´s a nice idea, althought I think the best place to buy it is in Bolivia, you will need a 4x4 car and all tools to a long travel. the road 40 in argentina is beautifull, brazil roads are good from south until rio de janeiro.
be carefull between colombia and venezuela and if you want to go to central america it is impossible because tehre is no road connection colombia to panama!!!
have nice travel!!! |

We bought our vehicle in Santiago almost 4 months ago and have been traveling around parts of South America in it. It has been an amazing experience, but sadly we are now at the end of our trip and are selling the van.
We have a fully kitted out Ford Aerostar Van, 1993, and it's in great condition. We also have all sorts of camping gear to throw into the package including a gas stove, blow up matresses, camping table and chair set, cooler box, cooking equipment, lamp, etc. We drove the car through Chile, Peru and Ecuador, and the freedom it gave us was incredible.
Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in buying the van or if you have any questions about the process or just about driving around South America in general.
Happy travels
Garth
