Going to the Highlands at the end of the year and will probably drive, but is there a better way?

Edinburgh. I guess hiring a car is probably best. Would you suggest getting a train up to Aviemore or something then hire a car?

I suppose it's going to depend on what you do when you get there. As you point out, there's a station in Aviemore. I've been a couple of times and it's right in the centre within very easy walking distance of hotels, shops, cafés, etc. You could go walking from here, there's a stone circle within walking distance, but there's a number of attractions and stuff like the skiing where you'd really need some kind of transport, be that a hire car or going by bus. Again, the bus stops are within easy walking distance of Aviemore railway station - see this link for where the service extends.

Hi - having travelled as far north as John O Groats last week (we stayed in a self-catering cottage in Tain), you probably need a car. When my sister visits (she lives in Germany), she hires a car from Edinburgh airport and finds that's most convenient. I think this year she hired from Arnold Clark.

I hope you have a great holiday.

Margaret

Thanks Margaret, sounds like a good way forward.

Why do you want to visit Aviemore?

Aviemore to me is just a purpose built resort to cater for tourists but good if you are going there for skiing..

There are some are some fantastic places in Scotland though such as Perth, the areas around Royal Deeside and of course many good Highland towns.

I would go Ryanair into Prestwick as it is a direct service and is really easy to reach the centre of Glasgow from there Glasgow is just as easy but I don't think there's a direct service but is closer to the city. If your going by train it's longer from PIK but simpler. Both ways You will see beautiful country side and Scotland's biggest and best city with loads of fun things to do and see and your not an hour from the highlands and the new national park at loch lomond which is also great. Glasgow's miles better. That's where its all at and most attraction's are free or not that expensive to get into.

Huh?

But, according to his posts, he's trying to get to the Highlands... from Edinburgh.

Ah... this makes sense now. You're not in Inverness as you claim. You're in fact posting from India.

If ever anyone wanted an example of why it's not a good idea to hire someone on the other side of the globe to represent you when it comes to online marketing, this is a good example.

In accordance with our zero tolerancy rules, your attempt to deceive people about your location earns you a ban. I notice also that you just copied and pasted the text from the airliners.net forum. I think I'll take a moment also to alert Hedgefield Cottage in Inverness to tell them how it is that they're being "promoted".

lets ignore the sidetracking, to answer the original question i would always drive. but i would do that anyway but for that part of scotland the rail service is not going to get you to where you want to be.
as a bonus the drive to scotland has some amazing views on the way
