Hi there,
I used to work for an overland company and drove from Kathmandu to Cairo, several times in the last 5 years. This border crossing is not the greatest. On the Pakistani side you have Quetta which is politically unstable, and if you drive further into Pakistan you travel through the Baluchistan desert on the infamous 'robbers road' which is a well know area for bandits. The area is tribal, which means it's not under government control and they pretty much make up their own rules. On the Iranian side, it is pretty much desert - there used to be the fantastic mud citidel of Bam, but sadly this was destroyed by a massive earthquake a few years ago.
If you are planning to drive through Pakistan (which incidentally is one of my favourite countries) there are plenty of police complexes along the way, and they are happy for you to pull in and spend the night within the police complex for security.
Hope this helps
Nat
ps I work for a travel company and we run a lot of trips in Pakistan, so if you'd like a bit more info drop me a line |

Nat: welcome to the board. I see you've made yourself comfortable...welcome. Please put your web link in your signature file. We discourage direct emails being posted.
...aslo, keep timeframes in mind, the original poster was asking about a trip for "next summer" in December of 2006. The information you provided is helpful, but I imagine they've already made the journey. _________________ My flight map. A million miles and counting....Where I’ve been around the globe. |

I can't recommend you not to use that road. As said before, this road is known for its unsecurity, not only for bandits but also because it is used as the opium and drug road. _________________ http://www.spa-leaders.com |

The big trips across Iran/Pakistan were all well and good in the 70s but considering how dangerous Pakistan is at the moment especially in remote parts, Im going to be avoiding it till its a bit safer! _________________ Looking For Car Hire?

| Traveling to Pakistan may seem to you as a bad idea, considering all the messages brought to us by the media and the political leaders, but the reality is that most of the world does not have the insight to what this country is really about. If you want to learn about the people in Iran and their rich culture, the changes that took place in Iranian history and lead to one global propaganda promoting only the negatives, you should read [deleted] and try and see things from one liberating and positive angle. If we agree that truth is somewhere in the middle, then we should at least give ourselves a chance of not being biased and learn about what we fear, since fear itself is mostly caused by ignorance...You can also visit the site [deleted] |

recommending a book is fine, but when you do it twice in the same context in just 3 posts, and throw in a web site that promotes the book, you're pushing yourself over the lines of 'advertising'
please make sure you're familiar with the advertising rules. _________________ My flight map. A million miles and counting....Where I’ve been around the globe. |

i think the situation in that particular place is more volatile now.. i suggest that you choose a different route which is much safer.. Pakistan right now is having trouble with India.. one wrong turn, and something bad might happen between Iran and Pakistan also.. just be careful if you still want to take this route to Pakistan.. _________________ philippine travel destinations - filipino food recipes - philippines travel guide |

Iran seems to have problems with everyone which is a bit stupid since they kindof need some allies out that way. Guess they not exactly pleased with Pakistan being too friendly (in theory) with the US.
As for India - aren't they always having a war of words with Pakistan? Is it even possible to cross from India to Pakistan these days or have they closed that border again?

Both countries you want to travel to is a BIG NO NO at the moment. Let the situation get better (war in afganistan ends) , than these area will be a lot more stable and secure to travel and explore. _________________ "Holiday Help" know before you go
