Mahahual WAS amazing... but I was just back there about 6 months ago and the city was still utterly devastated by hurricane dean from last year, it didn't actually have a beach (or any buildings for that matter), since it was all blown away.

The beaches up and down the Riviera Maya are no what they used to be.

I have visited the area many times over the past 10 years and have watched their decline.

I have just been to Cancun, the beaches in some parts were very nice, and in other non existent.

I would do some research on a hotel you like and keep your eye on recent photos posted by guests.

That way you can see where the better beaches are

Tulum is absolutely stunning. I thought it was the best beach I've ever seen, and mostly empty. I was there during 'swine flu' though, so perhaps it gets busier during high season.

I am partial to Tulum. Swimming with Mayan temples around you is pretty cool.

Playa del Carmen is the best if you like power white sand and perfectly blue water.

IMO, Cancun is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the world. Its unique beaches with white powdery sand and totally transparent water are its main attraction.
Moreover, it is the best for wedding and there are lots of honeymoon spots over there and every year numbers of tourist gets married there.
