The american embassy is a very good place to contact should you need direct information about any place, I dont think you will have any problems but vigilance is always useful Wink

Spend some time reading news stories about the drug wars. Pull out a map of Mexico and find those areas where the drug wars are at its worst.

...and no, Cancun isn't one of those areas.

Cancun is as close to the trouble at the U.S./Mexican Border as L.A is close to Chicago in the U.S. If there were riots in the street in L.A. it would not have much affect on the people walking around in Chicago.

That being said, always be careful when traveling to a place you are not familiar with.

Working in the travel industry in Mexico, I have been asked this question many times lately. It seems that some travellers think we Mexicans are killing each other, or that even tourists could become targets. The truth is that there is a problem with the drug cartels and what you hear out there is what is happening since the Mexican government started erradicating the problem, as expected the drug cartels are fighting back. In case you were wondering, 99.9% of us Mexicans really praise what our Government is doing, unfortunately, the task isn't easy and in the process some concerns about security arise.

Anyway, there are some areas where even the most adventurous Mexican wouldn't go to avoid any risks, and that is definitely not the case with Cancun or the Yucatan.

Recently, the number of visitors to Cancun and the Yucatan in general, has dropped but that is more a consequence of the global crisis than because of safety issues.

I was there in late March and early April - about the time you posted - and it was just as it has always been. The hotel zone is very safe. I have friends who live in the city and they tell me they haven't seen anything to worry about. Police presence is heavy between downtown and the hotel zone but very light in the hotel zone. All in all, I would have no hesitation bringing children to Cancun.[/url]

You’ll have absolutely no problem regarding the ‘drug war’ issue in Cancun. I stayed out in the suburbs of Cancun in December 2007 when I was there and never even heard any of it mentioned. Plus quite a few other smaller towns without any hitch. Plus over the year travelling Latin America I met dozens upon dozens of others which have also been to Cancun and not one issue. I’d say it’s more likely to have a coconut drop on your head than to find yourself in the middle of what your questioning about  As like normal in most cities, it’s the petty crime and pick pocketing you have to be cautious about.

So don’t worry - go for it, and have a fantastic time! ...But make sure you also get out of Cancun and visit some surrounding areas which are packed full of magnificent ruins (Chichen Itza to the west, and Tikal to the south) are some of the closest Smile

I have been in Cancun last April and I felt very safe and relax.

And as far as I know the war is going on at the other side of Mexico and not Cancun / Playa Carmen area which is very far!

I also think that the goverment will go beyond his duties to keep Cancun SAFE since is one of the most important touristic destinations.

So go, relax and enjoy your stay my friend.

I have been to Cancun over 30 times in the past 20 years. It is a very safe place. I have never had any problems or meet anyone that has.

Yes, Cancun is absolutely safe place for travelling because it is one of the most prominent tourist destinations in the world. My friend visit last year and he said there is no problem for any issues he went there for its honeymoon. You have to visit there without any tension and I hope you will enjoy every moment of your vacation.

Tourists are unlikely to be bothered by drug cartels unless they go looking for trouble. Cancun is such a tourist city that it shouldn't be a problem. The war is all in northern Mexico anyway.

Just take the usual precautions. You're far more likely to have trouble with drunks and pickpockets than with cartels.
