i'm heading to La Habana for a week in July and would like some tips. i know it will be scorching hot, so any advice as to how hot/how to survive it? I'm also interested in doing the home stay thing, are there any websites where u can make reservations in advance? Money wise, can you change travellers cheques in most Cuban banks? and regarding the CUC/Peso thing, as I like to get off the beaten track, how can tourists switch CUC for pesos, and is it safe to do so? How can you best avoid getting scammed on CUC prices, I've heard some places will try to charge one-to-one on peso prices? Is Cuba as expensive as I've heard for tourists? Also, I'm vegetarian - what are the chances of getting decent veggie food?
Apart from that, any general tips/recommendations would be most welcome, things to see in and outside La Habana, any good beaches nearby, good bars/restaurants, where to catch some salsa, how to get around... look forward to hearing from you!
Thanks,
Paul |

| my parents are Cuban discent and they are itching to go back. i live in America and although it is not 'legal' to travel there, i would love to go and see it. i have heard from friends that have gone, that it is NOTHING like it was back in the 60's. the beaches are all but runned down, and they said that there was some sort of curfew.... |

just bring a sunblock cream to protect your skin as it will be hot when it gets hot. sunblock can protect against certain skin diseases..
if it's in the rainy season, just bring some coat, umbrella or boots.. these stuff are the basic things to consider when going out in a rainy season.,. _________________ philippine travel destinations - filipino food recipes - philippines travel guide |

Are you an American wondering how or if you can legally visit
Cuba? Join the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have
experienced the thrills of visiting this exciting and exotic
destination legally.
Americans can travel to Cuba legally if they are a Cuban
American, politician, journalist or if you have a research
project that is about Cuba. Others including students,
religious groups and humanitarians can apply for a license from
the U.S. Treasury Department Office of Foreign Assets Control
(OFAC).
However, having said this, did you know that...
Between 100 000 and 200 000 Americans visit Cuba every year
while only some 6000 licenses are being issued in a 1-2 year
period! That means there are a lot of Americans who are going
without the government's permission.
If you are someone who wants to exercise their right to travel
freely, and have been dying to see why the Canadians call this
destination their #1 hot vacation spot; here is a guide that I've put
together to help you get that Cuba vacation! |

Would expect July to be very hot & humid in the Caribbean - take a look at the climate stats on a weather site =) _________________ My signature file has been deleted, because I'm not being honest about my location, which is a violation of the zero tolerance policy.

i've heard very much mixed reviews of cuba. i've also heard that if you've visited cuba recently you aren't allowed into the US, is this true? _________________ Turkey Holidays (¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯`·.¸¸.·´¯) Holiday Discount Centre |

Well, it has been almost 6 weeks of biking, driving, hitchhiking, horseback riding and taking the train through the entire island of Cuba.the very heart of tourist-oriented Havana, notice the grungy, probably fungus-coated buildings in the background. The buildings are painstakingly made from the wood of recycled cigar boxes, and buildings under construction, such as the sprawling Miramar Trade Center, are painted in white. _________________ discount accommodation melbourne |

Travelling to Cuba its safe. In every bank you can check cuban pesos by CUC. The change is fixed at 1CUC for 24 pesos. Anyways as a tourist you may keep your CUC in orther to enther touristic places. _________________ http://www.cubacation.net |

ok you got lucky i saw your post lol. i was born and raised in cuba , came to the states en 2001 and have my mother there still so i have to travel back and forth. i am going now in august with my GF that is american and i am trying to see if she can go directly or not with the new Obamaness in the air. i have heard from the miami travel agencies that many americans are going freely on direct flights ATM. this is another topic i will start here to see how many have done it.
advice 1: is going to be burning hot and very humid, expect temp to be in the 100 F and up and that is on the shade. a car with AC or a house with AC is your best shot, if not expect to be drenched and sticky.
last time i went in 2008 i took most of my money in travelers checks, the rate of exchange is at 14% deduction, meaning you get 86cents for every dollar. you get 80 cents per dollar when you exchange paper money for CUC.
the rate also varies depending where you go, best place to change believe it or not is in the airport, i got the best rate there after trying to echange in 3 different places. this is because i went to the National Hotel bank and the teller said i needed 2 forms of ID plus the receipt of my bank for the travelers checks. Can you believe that? i was so mad i left the place and never went back.
in the havana libre there is a bank as well. went there and after waiting for like 30 min in the line they did not change my travelers checks. the explanation was that apparently since cuba was out of the travelers check world and pretty much all teh new technologies about currency exchange, they got framed with thousands of fake travelers checks and from that point on ,many entities were not accepting them. that is what the tellers told me. Again best shot Jose Marti Airport currency exchange place. i went back there 2 times b/c it was the only place i could find in the whole havana city that gave a quick no hasle time.
BTW cubans that have lots of money will try to change you the dollars 1:1 for CUC. i am not going to explain why b/c i got to go to go eat breakfast right now but if you want to know why shot me a reply back and i will tell you.
be carefull b/c you can be framed and robbed in the process. the best shot are cabbies and the rent a car places opperated by the gov. the guys that rented me the car i drove exchange them to me 1-1 no questions ask. check also that they are legit. talk to you later peace |
