new zealand is quite small compared to australia. where ever you go, the beach it always just 150km away. the north island looks pretty much the same everywhere - grass and hills so pretty soon you have the feeling you have seen everything and there is not much left to explore.
i been in both countries and would go for australia. however, the tourist route sydney-cairns is pretty average. take the train from sydney to perth and then do the west coast, its cheaper there and not so touristy. _________________ get around cheap: Backpacker carpools & road trips |

Depends how long you've got. I like both for different reasons.
New Zealand is very easy to drive round. Auckland is a bit of a pain and Wellington is pretty busy as well but apart from that driving is pleasant.
Apart from Napier, which was disappointing, both islands have some great attractions but you do need the weather. It can be a bit changeable even in their summer. The further south you go the cooler it gets of course.
South Island scenery is spectacular with Queenstown and Milford Sound worth visits. Queen Charlotte Sound and Abel Tasman National Park on the north of the south island have outstanding scenery as well.
On North Island activities we particularly enjoyed on our last trip were (1) ride on the mail van from Wanganui to Pipriki joining the jet boat ride to The Bridge to Nowhere (2) Stay at Tokaanu on Lake Taupo -near to the lake and to Tongariro National Park (3) Visit to White Island, a live volcano off Whakatane (the trip also runs from Rotorua so you can catch all the volcanic action from there if you wish )and (4) Relaxing viewing the bay from our accommodation (Harbour View Motel) in Coramandel Town on the Caramandel Peninsular.
Oz is big and there are pleny of views about it on here already. The only point I'd add is that driving around Tasmania was if anything almost easier than NZ! |

Does anyone know how long it takes to get an Australian visa through if you are applying from the UK? _________________ http://itstravel.wordpress.com |

If you're talking about a visitor visa for up to 6 months stay they're electronic and it's pretty well instantaneous. The travel agent can do it for you (usually for about £15 each) or you can do it yourself by looking at the various internet sites that offer the facility. It's worth searching a few as the fee can vary -I think the last ones we had were priced in A$ and equated to about £10 each (can't remember the website though -it may have been the Australian Embassy or similar).
It's a very simple process.
Not sure about any other sorts of visa though. |

Living in New Zealand I guess I'm a bit biased, but really it depends how much time you have and what you want.
Australia has lots to offer, but its a big place and it can take a while to get to all the bits you want to see. Melbourne is a great city, the great coast road out of Melbourne is gorgeous, there are wineries and great food. Adelaide has great wineries and food. Sydney has lots going on, Brisbane and the Gold Coast are great, the Great Barrier Reef, Cairns, Kuranda, .... heaps to do and see. BUT its all pretty well spread out.
New Zealand is a lot smaller. There's also heaps to do and see but it tends to be packed into a smaller area.
How much time and money do you have?

oh, and keep in mind that they have drop-bears in australia. drop bears are the 53th leading cause of death in australia amongst tourists - be very carefull! _________________ get around cheap: Backpacker carpools & road trips |

That's a good point. We decided most of our time in New Zealand since living costs seem lower there and there are no poisonous/deadly creatures.
Then we'll do a quick week or two in Australia, just for a taste of the country. _________________ Paul's Travel Pictures

I'd go with Australia. I'd love to try Skydiving in Brisbane there. _________________ Skydiving Brisbane |
