Read this on a site.

The risks of taking drugs abroad, even cannabis, can be much greater than here. If you get caught, you risk life imprisonment or even execution. Some travellers bribe their way out of arrest, but this is not guaranteed and can be immensely costly.
Keep a close eye on your bag when crossing borders (by land, sea or air) to avoid becoming an unwitting mule. Use a padlock to secure it.

Surely a padlocj doesn't do much for a rucksack wioth open pockets and what happens if you have to leave your bag at the back of a bus when going across the border?
I'll probably only have a 40l pack with me so easy to keep on me at all times to avoid this happening but can't imagine I will alwyas be able to. |

Well clearly the first thing is simple, don't pack illicit substances with you, and second, don't let your bags out of sight. Locks are not 100% fool proof, but they can be a deterrent. If your bag is harder to access, the less likely it is that someone will slip something into your bags. Be it drugs, or as the case in spy movies, microchips or films with state secrets. _________________ My flight map. A million miles and counting....Where I’ve been around the globe. |

I would recommend to anyone not to carry any illegal substances to be sure. You will be searched sometime. Count on it. _________________ Check out my new blog!

| I'm not talking about carrying them, I'm talking about someone planting it into your own baggage and how to prevent it. |

If so, best thing you can do is get a bag which is completely sealed (no open side pockets or anything) and use a small padlock on the zippers so they can't be opened. _________________ Check out my new blog!

I've read plenty of reports of bags being stolen on buses in SE Asia when it was in the back and passenger in the bus. It's be quite easy for someone to pick a bag as a mule for transportation of things across the border without knowing or more likely the bribe scam doubled up with police. |

If you are in SE Asia and you are that worried about having drugs planted in your bag just buy an extra seat on the bus to put you bag in. The usual cost for a bus ticket is around $3 - $10 so its not that big of a deal to pay out the extra little bit of cash for the peice of mind. _________________ http://www.okinawa-information.com

I'm really paranoid about this kind of stuff and I never let my bags out of site. I also always kind of double check my bags to make sure there isn't anything missing..or anything extra that was planted in.
But like Red Tape said, locks do make a good deterrent. And pick out a bag that has less openings..preferably just that one zipper opening which will be locked. Unless someone is trying to set you up and get you into trouble, the trafficker would probably opt to pick someone else with a more accessible bag as a mule. _________________ Evaluate It Discount Travel Program

I think it would have helped if you'd read and understood the thread before replying. |
