My fiance gets motion sickness very easily, and this is a concern of his if we decide to go on a cruise for our honeymoon. If you get sea sickness from the motion of the ship, how do you cope with it? Do you take any medications or make special arrangements? _________________ Learn all you need to know before you go |

Hi Sappphira
If your fiancee suffers from motion sickness/vertigo, then trust me, postpone your cruise for another time far far in the future. Take if from one who has left their mark on many a rail, none of the so called cures for seasickness work. Bonine/Dramamine, soda and crackers, rubber bands, closing your eyes and chanting "I will not get sick" have no effect on "IT", trust me, I tried them all and I know, the only cure for seasickness is to sit under a tree. _________________ A sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life--W.A. If you really want to go on a cruise for your honeymoon, the medicine is necessary. Perhaps your fiancee is the man who have very good balance sense, so he could try to practise just like merry-go-round. _________________ Top Destinations in China | China Cities | Specials in China |

um, if he really does suffer badly from seasickness then I would suggest not considering a cruise for your honeymoon...! though some of the bigger lines with mega-ships tend not to loll too much (they have enormous stabilisers) I've been on a few big ships before and after a few hours you barely notice you're at sea!
anyway, whatever you decide to do have a lovely honeymoon |

I was about to ask something like this. And now that we've raised the issue... how does one know if one has sea sickess before geeting on a ship? What if ones decides to go on a cruise and then discovers on board that the journey won't be as relaxed as one had expected? What do the cruise companies tell people?
Just asking out of curiosuty, in case there is someone who happens to have an answer _________________ Rentalo.com

The only thing that has a chance of working is medication which you can get from the chemist, although I'd recommend trying to take them before hand to ensure he doesn't have a reaction and if possible take a few types. Also different ones work for different people which kindof complicates it, but if he start with the short term ones that should help.
Things like the band that you put around your wrist doesn't work, but the medication is pretty good these days as long as you don't want to drive afterwards (not applicable on a cruise).
It is however very, very horrible to be seasick especially as you can't just stop like you can in a car. Plus I'm not sure if you can drink alcohol with these tablets which might also not make a cruise a good thing. Only thing as mentioned is the bigger the ship, the less motion you get.
With regards knowing before hand. If you get car sick sitting in the back then it's pretty likely you'll get seasick, although no absolute guarantee.

If you get queasy on a roller coaster, you'll probably get seasick. I can also have a difficult time on glass elevators, of course on an elevator a lot depends on how much the building moves.
Good luck _________________ A sense of humor is the pole that adds balance to your steps as you walk the tightrope of life--W.A. Ward |

Sapphira, I got seasick twice on cruise ships.. The one time it was a gigantic vessel in the carribean. So, even on big ships it can happen. The second time it was on the Magellan Straight on the way to Antarctica in very very rough waters. I wanted to die! If there is the slightest sign, I would recommend to postpone this trip and plan something else for your honeymon. _________________ African Safari Holidays

its also good to try and get a midship cabin if you get sea sick
most of all go to your doctor prior to the cruise and get medicine
most of the time you dont even know you are on a ship so unless he has a very bad case of this if you do everything you can prior to taking the cruise he should be alright
i hope you get to go _________________ Melissa

I know Dramamine works very well for many people. My advice is that you ask your doctor, medicine has advanced a lot and I'm sure there must be something available to help him. Recently I have seen many cruisers with small patches behind their ears that help them. _________________ Costa Maya Excursions

I second ginger. Usually my other half just eats a little ginger and that seems to cure it. _________________ Cruises From Florida

Id go to the chemist though. My ex g/f had terrible sea sickness which would only be cured by tablets from the chemist. Iv been lucky as i sailed when i was younger and are used to rolling around lol.
Mind you a cruise ship is huge though?........ Would you even notice you were at sea unless you looked out the window lol _________________ Cardiff airport parking | Villa Benitachell |

Although I have not sailed on cruise ships, I use ferries at least once a year, including a 10-hour ferry. I used to regularly get ill on ships but now I have two strategies which have prevented me from getting ill:
I wear Sea Bands for the entire voyage. They are discrete wrist bands that apply a little acupressure to the Nei-Kuan point. I would not be surprised to learn that this is a placebo, but it works for me!
I always ensure I do not get too hungry. An empty stomach is the worst thing to have when sailing - little chance of this on a cruise ship, I would think!
It would be awful if you were ill on your honeymoon, so perhaps it is better to do something else. Have a great trip, whatever you decide! _________________ Hidden Italy: An alternative guide
