Hello,
I hope you don't mind me posting this on this travel forum. It's sort of about travel, as you will see!!!
I need advise of any kind on how to get jobs in Graphic Design in New Zealand.
I am planning to move over there without a job. By my reckoning it's going to be tough.
The industry seems very small. Does anyone know the best people to contact, are there any good recruitment companies? magazines dedicated to the industy?
I have over six years experience working in London.
Also does anyone know anywhere to get a good camper-van in Auckland and what kind of price they go for second hand?
Cheers,
Jason |

Hi Jason,
checkout www.seek.co.nz for jobs. They are our biggest job website, although are general adverts, so may miss something specific like your industry.
The biggest newspaper in NZ is the Auckland www.nzherald.co.nz and have loads of adverts current to the day-before's paper.
If you are looking for a cheap knocked-around campervan, just turn up and go around the hostels area and they are being sold by backpackers heading home. If you are coming to Auckland there are a few car fairs each week that sell as well. If you want an expensive one, 'real' companies can be found in our www.yellowpages.co.nz.
Also, plan your travels at the Tourism Baord website at www.newzealand.com.
Safe travels,
Terry. _________________ Trek New Zealand

Dear Terry,
Thanks for that!
I always appreciate the amount of help I seem to get on these kind of forums. It also gives me a good feeling for the people from New Zealand, who seem to have just that extra bit of time to help out. Coming from London(a rude kind of town) it's fairly refreshing.
The camper van info is also very helpful. It has been quite difficult to decide on this actually. I am planning to either buy a car or a camper van. The car option would also mean the purchasing of a good tent, though we are travelling in October and so it may well be wet/cold as I understand. My girlfriend and I are travelling for one month and then after that, will be looking for jobs so we will probably be based in either Auckland or Wellington I guess(where a van may be a liability). Anyway looking forward to it. If you ever want any cut-price graphic design work done let me know, one good favour deserves another.
Cheers,
Jason

Hi Jason,
What are you doing about VISA? Long-term Business, Skills or Working?
What budget do you have for your camper-van?
Have a look at TRADEME.co.nz
I am a Pom and live on the NorthShore and we have a company by us who sells 2nd hand campervans, that is why I ask you about budget?
Laterz
Cheers

Hello Paul,
I have a NZ passport as I was actually born there 30 odd years ago.
As for the van this is tricky. I have been informed I can get a second hand van
for around £800.
Not sure what my budget is tops, probably £1500 or so.
Is that your site you have mentioned, I may have a look.
How have you found it over there then, to your liking?
Cheers,
Jason |

Jason, it has not been easy to get here and it has not been easy the last few years! But things are looking up so who knows where the future lies. Yeh, the website is mine, mostly my wording and design via the BEST SEO in NZ and even ranked No 10 in the world, Michael Brandon @ Time2Dine - http://www.time2dine.co.nz
I have just looked on good old Yellow Pages, cant see the company listed for your van purchase
I will take a drive tonight and get you the info
Paul

| I found this site about living in New Zealand to be really useful http://www.moving-to-new-zealand.info/ as it is written by someone who has migrated to New Zealand and it has some excellent tips on what it is really like to live in New Zealand from an immigrants perspective. Also some great pictures in the gallery. |

This seems like an old topic/thread.. but I am also a graphic designer and I am looking for opportunities abroad and was wondering if anyone knows of any companies that generally pay for relocation?
Or is it standard that people move prior to landing a job?
any feedback or input would be greatly appreciated!
(P.S. I have 8 years of graphic design experience, with both mac and PC proficiency, worked in Print, Web, animation and am pretty savvy with technology. Is there a demand for my type of skill set here? )
thanks a bunch! |
