Hi

I'm Toni, 36, single mom.
I'm new to these forums so I'm hoping someone from Hobart is reading here.
I'm traveling to Hobart on the 9th of July, first time visitor, so I will feel like a total tourist...lol.
I am staying at Port Arthur on the first night then heading back to Hobart to spend the last 4 nights in Fern Tree. So I'm wondering how cold does it get it in Fern Tree?
I had a lady say that it snows there...Is that true?
And is there any snow on Mt Wellington yet?
Ok back to being a tourist and all, good places to visit?? Any Thoughts?
And nice reasonable places to eat, you know...somewhere where the locals go for a
good feed.
Please any comments would be great.

Cheers Toni Very Happy

If there is a good dumping of snow in June, there will most likely still be some up on the top of the mountain for days or weeks after. Some tour buses travel to the top of the mountain.

I absolutely love Hobart, however my dislike for cold weather keeps me away
from it during winter time!

One of the facts I love to present to people who don't think much of Hobart (and
who obviously haven't been there) is that Hobart was ranked as one of the
world's top 5 most photogenic city by the readers of the Lonely Planet Travel Guide.

You'll realise this as you travel through its scenic suburbs, many of which offer
lovely views to the Derwent River and valley.

I'm a big one for lookouts, so obviously you'll want to see the city view from
Mount Wellington. But there are also some other good vantage points.
Check out the Mt Nelson Signal Station and lookout, and don't miss Rosny
Hill lookout for views west towards the city and Tasman Bridge. Some of the
streets in the far west of the suburb of West Suburb are particularly scenic as
the suburb climbs up the adjacent mountain range, thus offering nice views over the
city centre with the Derwent River in the background.

If you're interested in a cruise, there are a number of operators in the Waterman's
Dock area, some offering long lunch cruises, or short 1 hour journeys up the
river.

Oh, and if you want a view over the beautiful Constitution Dock, go to the
Grand Chancellor Hotel (corner Campbell St & Davey St) and catch the lift
up to the one of the higher floors (just pretend you're staying there unless
you want to fork out $150-$250 a night!) and
enjoy the huge glass-lined foyers which over look the dock on each level.

Hobart to be a delightful place, with friendly people, excellent restaurants and bars, and decent hotels at a fair tariff. As is our practice we got out of the City quickly, but were struck that we didn't feel like we were escaping. Tasmania truly should be seen before any more "civilization" gets there. Whether we goes to the shoreside south of Hobart and Bruny Island, up the east coast to Freycinet N.P., or west to the wilds in the vicinity of Strahan, it is strikingly beautiful. The only downside is in the mining sector between Hobart and Strahan, but even that is good to see if only to appreciate how easy it is to screw up our environment if we aren't careful.
