Was in Spain again this week, on the Del Sol for a change! Saw quite a bizarre sign on a bin - "For your used batteries"
It was a normal litter bin, green in colour, and was placed at the entrance to a Golf Club House, and then on leaving I saw another one in the car park. At first I thought they were "doggy poop a scoop" bins, but it was clearly for small batteries as the gap to post them was only about 3cm x 10cm.
I am all for recycling and realise batteries have to be disposed off in a proper manner but why oh why would these bins be placed at the entrance to a bar? The mind boggles!
Although a friend did say she had just followed a couple round on the golf course that morning and she felt they needed to renew their batteries!

Anyone know who introduced the "battery bins"?

But one huge "step for mankind" has to be the solar powered traffic lights on the Algarve, now that is clever!

We have them in schools, doctors surgeries, pharmacies and some supermarkets.

They have them here in Belgium too. If you place at least 6 batteries in the bags and enter your name and address you are entered into a draw. The current prize is two Toyota Prius cars. Quite a good incentive to dispose of batteries correctly in my opinion. I wish it was that easy in the UK.

Do you have any photos or more information on the solar powered traffic lights?

I've never seen the big green wheelie bins if this is what you are referring to, but I noticed in Spain (well, Barcelona) that they do have battery disposal places in the strangest of places. They are usually small (like the size of the base of an industrial road cone, is the best analogy I can think of), and i've seen them: on the metro, in chemists, in supermarkets and in a butchers! I'm guessing they must get something for collecting them, and that everyone is not falling all over themselves to be so energy conscious?!

This one is actually from a parking meter in Vigo, Spain, but those in Barcelona are exactly the same (sorry I'm not in the habit of taking photos of parking meters, so didn't have one of my own!).

Here's a solar powered parking meter from New York city.

It's very much like the ones we used in Italy, but I don't know if those were solar powered or not.

in France they collect batteries as well, and they have solar-powered emergency phones along the motorway.... is mainland Europe more environmentally friendly than the UK??

In Holland it is pretty much the same deal. You can deliver your used batteries in special boxes at supermarkets and shops. Sometimes you can win a price if you deliver you batteries like a trip to hawaii for example. I think it helps a bit.
