I Have been to a few of the islands of Thailand , and so far, I havnt been to one I dont like. However, I think they are all quite different and want to get other travellers opinion on which is the best, and why?
I have visited Phuket, Ko Samui, Ko Chang (east), and Ko Samet, and loved them all.

Controversially, I would select Ko Samet as my favourite! It is smaller than the other islands, and much flatter and less tropical. However, I loved the total beach focus of living right on the beach, and walking on sand for everwhere you want to go. Sleep in a bungalow on the edge of the beach, eat at a restaurant on the beach, with the tide lapping at your feet, sit all day on beach chairs, swim in the beautiful green/blue, almost warm water . Also, is has far less western tourists (although gets a bit overrun on weekends by Bangkokians).

If you dont agree, tell me why!

everyone will have something different they are looking for in an island. i've lived on one tropical island or another for most of my adult life. i love the beach and palm trees but as i get older i really tend to appreciate infrastructure and the possibility to connect with a diverse group of expats.

that's part of the reason i chose koh samui, we have basically everything here that phuket has but only get 1 tourist for every 5 they get.

fits the bill for me.

I prefer Koh Chang, but you can try Koh Samui and Phuket.

If you prefer diving probably the best will be Koh Tao

Some day I want to visit the outer islands near Koh Chang .. Koh Kut, Koh Kradat. They should be what a tropical island is all about. Anyone here traveled those islands?

The East coast of Phi Phi is VERY hard to beat. Beautiful quiet beaches and crystal clear water. Just fabulous !

Ko phantan - I assume this is Koh Phangan (next to Koh Samui). Currently more backpacker focused awash with very cheap guesthouses (US$3-5 per night), although the developers are moving in now with their 4 and 5 star resorts. it will be a few years yet before it is fully overdeveloped but get there soon if 5 star is not your thing!

phi phi - stunning island but stay away from the main Tong Sai beach as it is over run with day trippers for most of the day

Ko lanta - large island with little infrastructure, all levels of accommodation but more limited in terms of good restaurants and things to do, somewhere to chill at a nice resort or hang with the travellers

ko lak - should be Khao Lak (Koh is the Thai word for island). Khao Lak is on the mainland, nice beaches and resorts here - famous as the place the Tsunami hit hardest.

ko tao - translates as Turtle Island, near Samui and the best place to dive in the Gulf of Siam, IMHO the place is too dive focused and caters too much towards diving for a none diver to really enjoy - the only topic of conversation in the bars in the evenings is - yep you guessed it -diving! Shame as it was s stunning place before all the money moved in there.

Go there before it sinks under the weight of the development.

I wanted some peace and quiet and had the beach at Bailan Bay mostly to myself (went last month) and it was an easy walk or bike ride to the much-more-lively Lonely Beach (trust me Lonely Beach is not lonely, it should be called Lively Beach!)

Thailand has almost too many islands and I definitely want to go to the Similan Islands when I get the chance. I didn't have enough time on this trip plus I don't think they open for tourism until mid-November so I just missed the opportunity.

I also went to Ao Nang (Krabi province and near Krabi town) which is an average beach but you can get small boat trips for 300 baht to nearby islands where you can chill but you can't stay overnight.

Or maybe you can if you take a sleeping bag or tent? Would be nice to try...

Sounds little known but mentioned as a "dream budget destination" in an MSN news page the other day. I think it may be in Krabi province...

Anyone....?
