More than 3,500 commuters are killed each year using the Bombay Railway system. That's an average of 10 deaths a day, an article on the BBC News site highlights.
These horrific statistics are mainly due to people crossing the lines instead of using footbridges. When an announcement is made changing the platform a particular train will pull in many just run across the tracks in order to avoid missing their train.
Other problems highlighted include bridges in poor condition and bridges crowded with vendors and beggars making traversing them difficult.
Other risks include falling between the train and platform, commuters hanging out of trains and being struck by poles. Overcrowding on trains also makes the problem worse. Often a 9 carriage train, designed to carry 1500 ends up carrying 4000.
Work is underway to make the railways safer by removing the poles, fencing off the trackside etc but there is a long way still to go.
