This is one of things that keep puzzling me. So many people don't know directions including ones who drive 3 wheelers and move rickshaws. I'm guessing that you took 3 wheelers and rickshaws when you were in India. They don't know directions, while they're really supposed to know. If it's their day one, I can kind of understand, but it seems that they all started working yesterday or they are simply incapable of remembering anything.
Another thing is that they never show up on time. In many cases, it's not just off by a couple of hours but off by a couple of days. This really drives me crazy. I really need to just sit here for hours and days until a guy (yes, always a guy ...) shows up. Very very unproductive ...
Spending two weeks plus+ in Japan where things work felt like a nice time off, though it really was a part business trip. I was restoring my energy and sanity, but only a week after I came back here, I'm losing it again. Soon, I'll go into depression and making a plan to check out of my life early ... *** Arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ... *** _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

| ooen wrote: | Yet another wedding function ...?
I just met my friend this morning and found out that he and his family members were out of town this weekend. I was a bit concerned that it might have been due to a family emergency, but it turned out that it was due to some wedding function. I didn't ask what exactly they did, but it seems that every wedding isn't just one day event; there are related events and ceremonies, and they probably spend 3 - 4 days all in all (or longer ...?). People here spend a lot of time and a lot of money (in Indian standard) for these things. I might be able to attend the actual wedding, so if that happens, I'll report it here ...
(Somehow, I doubt that there will be a wild Bachelor party with lots of strippers and escort ladies though ...) |
A while back, I was going to report about the wedding that I attended, but I never did, so I want to report about that and religious ceremonies.
There are a bunch of religious ceremonies and events, but many of them serve pretty much the same food as weddings. They look like the following:
I don't know about this particular wedding in picture, but let me tell you about this type of food. They suck. They're totally sub-standard. I was pretty disappointed to find out, but that's how it is. The thing is that these events are associated with spirituality, religion and what have you, so people in India typically don't tell you that the food served are sub-standard, but I want to inform you all. Food suck, so you might want to stop at your favorite restaurant before you go to an Indian wedding in India.
You might suspect that I dislike Indian food, but that's really not the case. Indian food served at restaurants and homes in India are pretty fantastic; they alone make your visit to India worth. I also like snacks like Gol Gappa; in fact, there is a very nice sweet shop that makes tasty Gol Gappa and I'll provide the address here when I get a chance. I want to make it clear that it's not that I dislike Indian food; it's simply that the food served at weddings and religious ceremonies suck.
I can also tell you all about how the wedding that I attended was boring, but I'll do it some other time ... _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

I have to disagree on this point
At my Indian wedding food was very good but our wedding was not one of those big productions like they have in Delhi.
In our case there where 3 cooks cooking food and sweets for days and it was well worth it . _________________ GHPtravel,

Ok, then I guess I need to make a correction. Big weddings like ones in Delhi serve crappy food.
They are big weddings, but this is why you learn that "size matters" doesn't always apply ...
I don't know exactly how many cooks I saw, but I saw dozens at the wedding that I attended ... _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

I already mentioned the following in an unrelated thread, but I should really mention it in this thread, so here it is ...
I went to my bank today and my friend gave me a ride on his scooter. Those of you who've been to India know that drivers there keep honking on the road and do other very uncivilized things like keep throwing trashes. Well, but even in that environment, there was one driver who was really obnoxious today. So, when we lined up with this driver, my friend spoke a few words to him. Traffic was moving (slowly), so it was just that, but a minute later, the traffic stopped because of the red light. We lined up again and this driver and my friend exchanged a few more words. I don't understand Hindi, but I could understand that it was a bit heated moment. Then ...
This guy got off his vehicle and approached us. He was pretty hot-headed. He took off the key from our scooter and threw it away. It was like a scene in a movie. ... I thought that I might see some blood today, but my friend cooled down and let it go.
This is the first time that I witnessed something like this as a participant (sort of), but I see people arguing on the road all the time. I often see people holding bricks and stuff. I don't know what's in their heads ...
...
This kind of helps me to understand what's happening in the middle east. They're all so hot-heated; they are not people who use reason to decide what to do next. They just lose their cool, and if they have guns, rifles and grenades, they'd use them. That's why they've been killing each other for ages ... _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

I keep bashing India, but there is yet another thing to mention, alcohol. Even today, alcohol does not have a very positive image in India. Well, I can kind of understand why ...
I went to a liquor store today to get beers; believe or not, this was the first time that I went to any liquor store alone to get beers since I moved to India. Also this was only the second time that I went to any liquor store. Atmosphere was so bad, and my guess is that it's always like that. Those who hang out around liquor stores look like thugs. I also stopped at a couple of bars in India; bars in hotels are ok, but regular bars have pretty terrible atmosphere. They're nothing like nice quiet peaceful bars that you can visualize regulars sitting, having a few drinks and reading Marcel Proust or D.H. Lawrence. This translates into the negative image of alcohol in India ...
I should someday write a book titled "Hell does exist on earth and its name is 'India'" ... _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

I just read this news article now:
| Quote: |
New Delhi, June 18 (IANS) While generous rainfall over the weekend brought cheer to the capital with most people indulging in outdoor activities, a heavy downpour Monday morning wasn't greeted with much joy.
As the city received 104.7 mm of rain in just four days, much more than the usual 55 mm it receives in the month of June, the city faced waterlogging problems.
'The weekend was just fantastic and I and my family went to India Gate to simply enjoy the weather out in the open. However, this morning I got terribly late for work thanks to the traffic jam and the water logging on the roads,' said Pravin Misra, who works with an advertising firm.
'The roads of Mukherjee Nagar in north Delhi get choked after an hour of rain. And it has been raining for the past four days. We had to fold up our jeans till the knee level to walk across the road. A couple of cars were stranded but that is a normal sight during the rains,' said Nazvi Ahmed.

I'm getting something tangible finally ...
One of reasons why I moved to India is to access cheaper workforce; that's not the only reason, but it's one of reasons. However, ever since I moved here, I was just running around to get paperwork done, open bank accounts and get necessary things like apartment, gas, fridge, cooler, etc. Six months just came and went while I barely produced anything. But today, finally, ... I got one person to make two blog entries; this is a party of my online business by the way. I admit that I wasn't very savvy in many ways; I also admit that I had a tight budget to get things done. But, my god, it took an awfully long time to accomplish this. _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

I still find something amusing ...
Monsoon season started in India, but Delhi is not hard hit. In fact, from what I hear, Delhi never suffers like Mumbai and Calcutta suffer. However, I find something amusing. After a couple of days of light rain last week, traffic signals around the city stopped working. It's not that people around here actually look at traffic signals and follow them, but this certainly didn't make the traffic situation better.
What's next? Maybe I'll see Metro train system starting melting away after heavy rain (which is expected to hit Delhi pretty soon ...) ... _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

So my friend suggested me to study Hindi. Actually he suggested me to do this a couple of times. I said yes every time. He told me that he can start teaching me Hindi this week, but it seems that it won't be happening. I'm hoping that I'll start next week, but I'll see ...
I'm eager, but I'm not so sure if this 'teacher' will show up on time everyday. _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

| Quote: |
The Maharashtra government’s education department is probing a Mumbai school which the Shiv Sena alleges is forcing the Bible on non-Christian students.
The Shiv Sena alleges the St Augustine High School in Navi Mumbai is forcing students to read the Bible against their wishes. Hasan Mushrif, Minister of State for School Education, told CNN-IBN the action would be taken against the school if the allegations are found correct.
"I have an ordered a probe to find out if the school is spreading Christianity and forcing Bible lessons on students," said Mushrif.

By now, I'm thinking that I get used to crazies in India, but I still find new amusing things like this.
This is pretty crazy. This is a Catholic school or Baptist school, so they have a bible class and it's mandatory. Yet some student's parents apparently think it's inappropriate. Why do they ever think that? I don't know. What's even more crazy is that the state government actually takes this case seriously. Why??? _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum

More B.S. ...
I stopped at a post office today to send a parcel. The parcel was neatly packed, but this damn post office refused to take it. Why? Because it needed to be wrapped using a peace of cloth ...???!!! I couldn't believe it. Too much B.S. around here ... _________________ Online Education :: Career Development Forum
