I suggested in another thread in this forum that the cost of a beer might be as good an indicator as any as to how affordable a location is to live in. How about we explore that idea a little further...?!

I know things vary enormously... but let's assume we're dealing with a standard bottle (about half a pint) of standard beer in a standard bar...! Rolling Eyes

And I appreciate certain countries don't allow alcohol, etc. - but let's try the concept out. Post your location, and any location you've been to, where you know what the approximate cost of a beer is at present. It's probably a good idea that we use the same currency - how about USD (to the nearest 50 cents)?

OK... I'll set the ball rolling:

Kendal, England - 2.00 USD
Manchester, England - 2.50 USD
London, England - 3.50 USD
Barcelona, Spain - 2.50 USD
Prague, Czech Republic - 1.00 USD
Kangerlussuaq, Greenland - 4.00 USD (from memory)

mikeman (in the other thread) states:

Quote:
Whistler Ski Resort Canada $2.50 - $4.00 US. (Probably $3.00 average)

In Hong Kong it's very easy to pay over US$9 just for a coffee.

In Lang Kwai Fong a beer would be anything around US$8 upwards and in hotels the sky's the limit!

I'm a Namibian and read on a website that Namibia is the cheapest place in teh world to get drunk. The site quoted a beer costing 30c and though you'd probably look quite hard to find a beer at that price, depending where you're having it, you could defnitely get one for under 50c.

You'll pay US$2.50 for a Bud Light in Dallas at a sports or dive bar. You'll never pay more than $4 though anywhere in the city. Cocktails range from $3.50 to the sky's limit.

The cost of a beer is not a good indication of how affordable it is to live in a location. Some countries are well known consumers of beer the Irish and the Czech's for example. Other countries don't touch the stuff. Also the tax levied on it varies considerably around the world. Although this is a very interesting subject in its own right, perhaps someone could come up with a universal commodity that gives a good yardstick.
How about the Big Mac?

Rice or flour?

Not as popular as beer for travellers to compare prices with though.

Hey, here in Canada (Manitoba) beer costs at least 4$ CDN so about $5.50 USD at least. That's for restaurants for sure, not sure about the real bars.

Have a look at this article from the BBC. It appears that these drinks were not classified as beers, but malted drinks as they were less than 5% alcohol. Does that mean I can get a few UK brewers for Trade Descriptions? Beer Laughing
