Basically, me and my friend (london boys) want to fly into LA and buy one of those old indestructable 80s Toyota 4x4s and road trip it down to rio via peru and bolivia. We've got the balls to do it, but not much else. I've been doing a little research and it all seems relatively straightforward until you hit southern panama. I think there used to be a ferry that bypassed the border areas, but I think we would rather get a boat straight to either Peru or failing that, norhern Brazil.
Any views on this idea?

We're planning this for august 1st for two and a half months

thanks

sean

Good luck to you and your mate, Sean.

I suspect you'll need to get a few boats to make such a long trip, even to Brazil from Panama or Costa Rica.

My sister used banana boats to get from Mexico to Honduras after the 1997 hurricane. I don't think they'd have carried a vehicle though.

If you have the funds and time to wait until the right boat turns up, or to fly the truck when needed, the trip is doable. If time and money get short, you might end up abandoning it along the way.

Best of luck, and tell us how you get on.

Dan.
