This presumably only works on highways, thus anyone doing say 140K's (100mph) which is the required speed to trigger this would be banned in the UK anyway. Why don't they just do that instead?
I'm assuming that this works something like:
- Plane spots someone going very fast
- Officer on ground is dispatched
- Officer zaps car with radar gun from bridge or similar
- Officer then has to stop car (not easy at 100mph).
Erm...but since the officer is in the area anyway to catch up with said car and check it's speed, exactly why do they need the plane? Couldn't said officer just stand beside the road waiting for speeding cars and probably slowing everything down to a "safe" speed without the need for a plane?
Me thinks there might be a tiny and very expensive flaw in this plan...
Of course there is another option - just go to Western Canada instead.

I think this is a really good idea. Recently here, we have had a number of tragedies with pedestrians as well as drivers and passengers caused by street racers. One person dead didnt make enough of an impression, and the next day two people on their way to their car were killed by two cars racing each other at very high speeds.
there is a move to have anyone convicted of street racing to have their car confiscated and then it would be compacted and the resulting cube dropped on the front lawn etc of the offender. Of course they would also have to pay for this to be done, and the disposal as well as the original fine.
apparantly , some states in the USA do this, and the idea being that it would get the offenders attention and perhaps the attention of other potential racers. Some people really dont get that going so fast is potentially extremely dangerous for them and for innocent offsiders. _________________ Leonie

Only small problem is - what happens if they live in a flat / apartment? Interesting concept I must admit and maybe it would get their attention, although banning them from driving would also have an even bigger effect.
Actually could even take the idea from Saudi Arabia where they chop off body parts for various offences and if you chop off the right bit, that might sort the hormones.
Other thing is - assuming these street racers are doing this in town, is a plane really going to be much good?

Please take note that these are poposed changes, and are only being discussed in Ontario. (Which is the most anal retentive province in Canada) Furthur more these penalties are the max with a conviction - which only happens a fraction of the time.
That being said I would not roccomend that any traveller come to Canada and drive like they were the only one on the road, all provinces are cracking down on careless driving. (And don`t even think about driving impaired, that does not fly at all no matter where you are in Canada) |

Nice to see all areas of Canada getting along so well...
From what I saw of Canadian drivers, most were a lot better than those in the UK and just sat back until there was a passing place. Definitely does not sound like the UK (or France). You've also got the nice wide roads too.
However, I have also had reports that drvers in Montreal have an interesting view of road rules like "what road rules". That my kindof place where things just get done!

I was shocked by the amount of drink driving that goes on in canada. When I went to uni there everybody used to drink and drive. Crazy! _________________ World Reviewer: World Travel Guide | Holiday ideas | Great travel deals |

That is very harsh Punishment. I am sure they have changed the rule now in 08.

Here is the law:
"•Increases fines for street racers and aggressive drivers, including those who drive 50 km/h or more over the posted speed limit, to $10,000 and allows police to immediately suspend the driver’s licence and impound the vehicle for seven days;
This was done because of the increase in street racing and a few deaths, provincial government likes to react to public opinion and buy votes.
Planes are used by using marks on roads to pick up speeders.
The law is currently being challenged as unconstitutional. |

It sure is a hassle for many people. They do have some special arrangements for large fines. _________________ Voyage Montreal |

HI,
Recently i got an update regarding this and this law is very necessary too as per the traffic rules in Canada.
This is very necessary as per the safety purpose also.
