This topic has been covered a few times on here before. Last month at:

Villa versus Hotel

...and most notably in these two threads which each run for a few pages:

Hotels versus Vacation Rentals
A home against a hotel in Florida

At least with the majority of apartments you can have some form of "cook it yourself"
That would be one of the major preferences I personally have

Apartments or house all the way.

As long as you can have them cleaned and there are great restaurants where you can eat out.

Why go on holidays to do all the thing you do at home, someone always gets the short straw.

Apartments are great with kids.

But am sitting on a fence a little as have reason why a hotel can be better some times ,I tend to mix it up depending on location.

I think I mostly err on the side of preferring an apartment over a hotel, the freedom & space they give are the big attraction for me. On the other hand it is good to go for a hotel every now and then as a change, it's nice to be pampered sometimes. Cool

I think it depends on where you travel and how long you are going to stay.

For example if I travel to a small beach town or village I'll definitely choose apartment or small cottage, because it is cheaper and I can organize my food as I like.
And if I go to a business trip to a big city I'll prefer hotel room, because it is more comfortable. It helps to save time Very Happy Very Happy

I think people are generally moving away from hotels and are taking the more affordable option of apartments. Owners are generally really getting switched on with what to provide and also offering a service. It took a while in Malta, however the quality of apartments is now very high and the prices are fairly reasonable.

If money is not an option I'd always go with a hotel. I couldn't tell you why but I prefer a hotel over an apartment.

Hotel. I love the room service and not have to clean up when done.

I agree with some posts - I think it depends on how long you stay, and where you go. For example, 2 personal experiences. I went to Rome with my wife about 5 years ago,a nd we were out of the hotel all day, walking around and sightseeing, so wouldn't have taken advantage of a kitchen, for example. It was great to have everything ship shape when we got back home, exhausted.

Similarly, we visited Venice and got an apartment. This was great as Venice is much smaller, so easier to relax in the living area on an evening with a beer, etc. rather than sitting on the bed with a minibar. The location of the apartment was also fantastic - literally 20 seconds walk from Saint Mark's square, so that worked out great for us.

I've got kids now, and would always look at an apartment option - 1 for the kitchen but also as most have a TV & DVD, etc. to entertain them a bit, things like that.

It definitely depends on how long I stay somewhere...

If I'm going away for only 2-3 nights, I go with a hotel as I love the 24hrs room service and movies (no, not the ones you think of Wink ).

But if I go somewhere for more than 4 nights, I prefer my own apartment with cooking facilities. Basically home away from home.

With me it's usually neither. I'm a bit of an enigma. I will occasionally stay in a hotel, but most of the time I am outdoors and I camp in my little teardrop trailer. After a few weeks of this even I crave finer amenities, so I trade some of my over 100.000 RCI points for a short stay at a resort. It's a great way to recharge. I bought the points in the secondary market and got a good deal with low maintenance fees. Depending on where I stay this gets me 35-40 nights for about $750 per year, plus trading fees.
I haven't met anyone else who travels this way, but it works for me. Very Happy

Hi,

When on holiday, I love hotels. but on business trips I prefer an apartment as its much more friendlier for working late into the night

Apartments are great for the space and privacy but totally agree you can't beat the room service in a hotel. Nothing like coming abck after a a day of walking to a newly made bed with fresh sheets and a tidy room.
