As someone new to this holiday malarky, it's nice to learn from others invaluable tips they've developed to make their holidays more enjoyable.

Afraid I couldn't find a "General Travel" forum so thought I'd try here.

When we went away for the first time last year the father in law sent a clipping of tips from The Daily Mirror (or one of that crowd!) that mentioned things such as:

- keep photocopies of your passports with you, in case the originals are stolen

Um. That's all I remember!

One thing I did learn myself was to use Nationwide for credit cards when spending overseas, as they don't charge for exchange rates, which can make things seriously cheaper.

Oh - and while researching a destination to go to, I'm currently using Flickr and Picasa to get a more detailed view of the location and hotels. Smile

Anyone have some good general tips, though??

"Tickets, passports, money... tickets, passport, money... tickets, passports, money..."

That's what I'm forever saying to myself when I head off anywhere... "tickets, passports, money..."

I figure that if I have those, everything else is sortable. If I forget any one of those, then I've got problems.

So I always check for those three when leaving the house, leaving the car at the airport, leaving to come back home, etc.

Probably makes me a bit paranoid because I'm forever checking, but - touch wood - there's been no major problems with those items so far.

Shouldn't that be, "tickets, passport, money, children"?

I leave that kind of forgetfulness to Americans. Wink

It is always good to plan ahead of time whenever you're traveling, like bookng flights and accommodation beforehand, and planning who you'll be traveling with(because if you're gonna travel in groups, you can get better deals with that). And it's good to do some research on some of the nice places to go to.

*grin* Am a compulsive checker myself, so empathise. I swear some of my mates think I'm mad, but at least I don't forget things... very often Embarassed

Another thing I'd add to those 3 essentials, if you're EU based and travelling within Europe, is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
OK, so travel insurance is a must anyway, but the EHI card is free, & it's another level of cover, in case there are any problems while you're away.

I think the most important travel tip is to mind your health.
*Drink only bottled water. Many people assume that tap-water outside Britain is as good as here. Oh, no. Even if you travel to Europe, don't drink tap water!
*Don't buy food from streets, markets and dodgy takeaways
*When I'm outside Europe, I eat ONLY in American fast-food outlets. Call me paranoid but I personally know a person whose relative returned back home in a wooden jacket only because he didn't question the quality of food he had during his trip Sad

Regarding hotels and other travel tips, you can find many interesting locations here on Aardvark or take a peek at tripadvisor.co.uk

Sad I would be sad if I only ate from fast food US style restuarants. there are plenty of good cafes etc that are safe in most locations.

my essentials are tickets passports and money, only it didnt do me any good, when my passport fell out of my bag onboard and it took so long for the airline to find it, that i had already paid for an emergency passport so I could go home.

other than those, camera is very important, and yes I do photocopy my documents, twice, and keep one set in my big luggage adn the other one i leave at home, so I can contact people if I need details. This is especially since my need to get a new passport, and that was the one time I had not got around to making copies.

this is another tip I have heard but am rarely either game enough or able to do. put every bit of clothing, you think you want to take out on the bed, and then put half of them back in the draws and wardrobe.

in another thread , people talk about taking one weeks worth of clothes in a carry on bag, how on earth can you fit that? esp if you also have toiletries.

set a budget for souvenirs and stick to it. I cant seem to keep to that one either, but it sure makes sense, esp when your bag is overweight from the souvenirs. haha.

I don't see how one can equate only eating at US fast food chains with minding one's health?

I've ingested tap water on the continent in Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Austria and other places, and have yet to become ill from it. You'd be surprised what you can handle in a first world nation.

I disagree that one shouldn't buy from street food vendors, at least you can see it being cooked in front of you.

Too many people wrap themselves up in cotton wool.

My travel tip....

make no plans and buy one way tickets!

Wow, I just saw this post and I am amazed!!

1) There is nothing wrong with the water in western Europe. It is quite all right to drink water from the fountains in Italy -- I don't know about the fountains in the rest of Europe but I know the water is fine everywhere else..

2) If you only eat in American fast-food outlets when you are traveling, you are missing one of the best reasons to be in another country. If you've never eaten risotto in Italy, you are missing a lot!

3) One of the best ways to have lunch is to go to a market, buy some meat & cheese & bread and find a place to sit and eat it.
